Career Exploration

Specialized Career Coaching for Young Adults

Young adults have particular needs when it comes to their careers. You’re either just at or near the beginning, and are usually feeling some combination of hopeful, excited, lost, and overwhelmed by the entire idea. The following options have been designed over two decades of working with young adults and discovering what makes an effective foundation for the clarity and confidence to really start you off strong.

Every person is wonderfully unique, and I approach the work with you the same way. Each package below describes a general process that has been very effective. The specifics of exactly what we work on, how much emphasis is on each part, and the types of activities that we do to get the results we want will depend on the individual. This work is highly customized to each person.

Let’s first determine where you are in your process so we know where to start.

1.  A young adult (college-20s) with no clear idea of a career direction.
The Career Foundations/Direction Package is about the who, what, and why: exploring who you are, what you want to pursue next, and a strong why for doing it. It’s about finding your way to something you’ll really enjoy doing, that you can become reasonably good at, and that you care about.

2.   A young adult who already has a clear direction, coming to that either on their own or just having worked through the career direction package, but who could really benefit from support through the initial implementation phase.
The Career Strong Start Package is about actually taking the next steps, sticking with the vision, knowing when potentially to modify the vision, and gaining and maintaining momentum when things inevitably get a little hard.

3.   A young adult who has a clear career direction, but has little or no experience in how to approach gaining employment in their chosen field.
The Developing My Own Job Search Toolkit Package helps you build skills and develop your own custom strategy for an effective and confident job search. This can be a stand alone service or added to one or both of the other packages.

Career Foundations/Direction Package

We will work together on the following:

1. Review/Self-discovery
Review previous education and life/work experiences
Uncover your strengths, values, interests, and your own personal definition of happiness, success, and well-being

2. Career exploration
Consider helpful ways to approach choosing and developing a career
Discover a variety of industries/roles, exploring which problems/challenges/solutions you might enjoy working on; ways you can do something that’s useful & makes an impact
Narrow to several possibilities worth exploring that would allow for the life that you want
Experiment with some activities to help you experience a few of the possibilities
Narrow to a top choice initial career direction, with at least one backup option

3. Potential next steps
Decide the career area/role that will be the focus of your next steps
Discuss concrete ways to try it/prepare for it (internship, training, education, job, project, etc.)

The ultimate goal of this first phase is to help you as you decide where to channel all of your ideas, energy, and enthusiasm; a place to start creating a career based on what lights you up and makes sense to you right now. We’ll identify one or two career directions that have the potential to be meaningful and provide the type of life you want. You can then make informed decisions going forward.

To accomplish this, we will have various types of discussions and do different exercises to help you imagine, explore, and see a clear path ahead. We may also use one or more assessments. The work is customized and unique to each person.

Our meetings will take place via Zoom (phone is an option sometimes, too) and will be 45-90 minutes each, with some activities to complete in between. At the end of each meeting, we will schedule the next one. The length and number of meetings can vary a little depending on the individual. We typically meet most weeks, though an activity may require more time in between or benefit from a second meeting in a week.

I take an emergent approach and will adjust methods and meeting schedule based on what works best for you at each stage. The work could take up to 3 months, though it is possible you may achieve the goals of this work in less time.

Investment: $4900 (typical package*)

*Since the exact scope of work is determined by the initial consultation, it might also require more time & expertise that could be additional fees. Examples:
An evaluation to see if graduate school makes sense
Factoring in special circumstances or challenges that may require more support

Career Strong Start Package

We partner together as you take your first steps toward your chosen career direction. You’ll receive weekly support sticking with the vision, knowing when to potentially modify the vision, and gaining and maintaining momentum when things inevitably get a little hard.

The support will consist of full meetings, shorter check-ins, and asynchronous questions and sharing. We will use a combination of Zoom, phone calls, and voice messaging (iPhone or Voxer).

This is highly customized, so the packages are designed around your specific career goals, personal factors (motivation levels, challenges, etc.) and how much support you’ll need. We will determine the scope of our work and length during an initial call (or at the end of our Career Direction work, if applicable).

Investment range: $3400–$9900, depending on length and level/intensity of support needed.

Find opportunities to practice skills and become involved in the chosen field

3. Organize the process more effectively

5. Incorporate feedback and make modifications
Support what’s working and keep iterating on the rest

We will spend more time on certain areas than others, depending on each person’s specific needs.

This package may take up to 3 months. We will use a combination of Zoom, phone calls, and voice messaging (iPhone or Voxer).

Over the first several weeks, we will spend a significant amount of time working together to establish many of these practices and develop basic tools (ie-resume). After that, our work will be to modify anything that needs to be tweaked, answer questions as different situations arise, and support you as you practice the process you’ve created.

As you know, the timing of when you find a job you want is affected by many factors outside of our control. It could be two weeks in, or go beyond the time frame of our initial work together. The work we do together is about more than a current job search; it serves as a foundational process that you will use throughout your career.

Investment: $5900
